Insider picks
Top things to do in Amsterdam
World-class museums
The Rijksmuseum houses Rembrandt and Vermeer masterpieces. Bodyworlds at NEMO offers something altogether stranger. Either way, plan a full morning — you will need it.
Cruise the canals
Amsterdam's UNESCO-listed canal ring is best understood from the water. Choose an open boat for flexibility; avoid the party cruises if you're there for the architecture.
Vondelpark & the Jordaan
Vondelpark on a Sunday morning is a local ritual — coffee, cycling, and a slow pace. Pair it with a wander through Jordaan's independent shops and brown cafés.
Editorial note
Good to know
Amsterdam is famous for its cobbled roads, Golden Age canal houses, and cycling culture that predates the tourism boom by several centuries. It rewards the visitor who arrives knowing that the best version of the city exists between 7am and 10am — before the tour groups disembark. Book museums in advance; the Anne Frank House in particular fills up months ahead. The GVB tram network connects most attractions seamlessly, and most residents speak English better than most English speakers.

FAQs
Is Amsterdam good for a city break?
Yes — Amsterdam is one of Europe's most compact and walkable capitals. Virtually every major attraction is within cycling distance of the centre, and the city has a clear sense of character regardless of the season. Two to four nights is the natural duration; fewer and you rush, more and you need a slower rhythm.
What to do for a weekend in Amsterdam?
A solid weekend covers the Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museum (book ahead), a canal cruise, and at least one meal in Jordaan. Add a morning at the Albert Cuyp Market on a Saturday, or Vondelpark on a Sunday if the weather holds. Leave time to get lost — the canal ring is genuinely enjoyable to navigate without a plan.
When is the best time to visit Amsterdam?
April and May for the tulip season and manageable crowds. June through August is peak season — warm, busy, and expensive. September offers golden light and quieter streets. November through February is the cheapest window and surprisingly atmospheric, though some attractions reduce their hours.
