What you need to hire a car
A full driving licence held for at least a year, a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit, and photo ID. Drivers under 25 usually pay a young-driver surcharge, and some suppliers set a minimum age of 21.
Non-local licences are usually accepted — if yours isn't in English, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Check the supplier's terms for any local restrictions before you book.
Car hire questions
Do I need a rental car?
Not for the city centre itself in most of Europe — public transport is usually faster and cheaper than driving downtown, and city centres often add parking costs or low-emission zone charges. Hire a car for day trips and onward travel to places the train or bus doesn't reach easily.
Where's the cheapest place to pick up a car?
Airport pick-ups are usually cheaper than city-centre desks and put you outside any congestion or low-emission zone the city centre may have. Compare both pick-up points on Discover Cars before booking.
What about congestion charges and low-emission zones?
Many European city centres charge for entry — congestion charges, ULEZ-style low-emission zones, and Italy's Zona a Traffico Limitato are common examples. Most rental cars are compliant, but check the rules for your specific city before driving in.
Do I need extra insurance?
Basic cover is included, but the excess can run to four figures if something goes wrong. Discover Cars' full-coverage option is usually cheaper than buying the same waiver at the rental desk.
Which day trips are best by car?
It depends on the city, but car hire generally pays off for reaching smaller towns, countryside, and coastal areas that are slow or awkward by train — check the local tips above if your city has them.
