These areas have the density of cafés, independent bars, and low-key venues that make hostel travel rewarding — you can follow a recommendation from a dorm neighbour and actually find something open. City-centre hostels are convenient, but they often sacrifice atmosphere for footfall; the best properties tend to cluster a few streets away from the main tourist drag, where rents allow for better common spaces and more considered design.
If your priority is meeting people, the social hubs of any city — nightlife corridors, markets, converted industrial neighbourhoods — will serve you better than staying next to a landmark.
